چکیده
In this paper we discuss four early F-type variable stars whose periods are an order of magnitude slower than known pulsators of comparable luminosity. They cannot be stars undergoing simple radial pulsations. For one or more of these stars we can discount the possibility that the variability is due to rotational modulation of star spots, interactions with (or tidal distortions by) a close companion, or obscuration by a rotating lumpy ring of dust orbiting the star. They are certainly not eclipsing binaries. The only possibility left seems to be non-radial pulsations, though this explanation involves difficulties of its own. If they are indeed pulsating stars exhibiting nonradial ∗To be published in: Comments on Astrophysics, 1993

γ Doradus Stars: Defining a New Class of Pulsating Variables
In this paper we describe a new class of pulsating stars, the prototype of which is the bright, early, F-type dwarf, γ Doradus. These stars typically have between 1 and 5 periods ranging from 0.4 to 3 days with photometric amplitudes up to 0. 1 in Johnson V . The mechanism for these observed variations is high-order, low-degree, non-radial, gravity-mode pulsation. Subject headings: Stars: varia...
متن کاملPulsating Stellar Atmospheres
We review the basic concepts, present state of theoretical models, and the future prospects for theory and observations of pulsating stellar atmospheres. Our emphasis is on radially pulsating cool stars, which dynamic atmospheres provide a general example for the differences with standard static model atmospheres.
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

While the distribution of spin periods of High Mass X–ray Binaries (HMXBs) spans more than four orders of magnitude (69 ms – 25 min), the few known X–ray pulsars accreting from very low mass companions (< 1 M ⊙) have very similar periods between 5.4 and 8.7 s. These pulsars display also several other similarities and they are probably members of a subclass of Low Mass X–ray Binaries (LMXBs) wit...

RX J0720.4-3125 has recently been identified as a pulsating soft X-ray source in the ROSAT all-sky survey with a period of 8.391 s. Its spectrum is well characterized by a black-body with a temperature of 8× 10 K. We propose that the radiation from this object is thermal emission from a cooling neutron star. For this black-body temperature we can obtain a robust estimate of the object’s age of ...
